Heritage Building Restoration for a Retail Boutique
Targeted interventions were carried out throughout the masonry, including the replacement or repointing of bricks in the masonry wall. This work restored the integrity of the masonry structure and ensured the long-term durability of the building. Concrete work was also completed: our team poured a new slab in the basement and installed new concrete floors. Structural concrete beams were also put in place to adequately support the building’s loads.
The stone surfaces of the cladding were first cleaned using various methods adapted to the types of soiling, including the removal of copper stains and pollution residue. Some stones were repaired or replaced depending on their condition, including the use of spall repairs to address damaged sections. Resurfacing work was also carried out using restoration mortar to achieve a uniform appearance across the stonework.
Our team built nine stone columns, each resting on a steel structure and a rail system ensuring their stability and alignment. Their defining characteristic was the complete absence of right angles. The stones were shaped and rounded to ensure perfect alignment between each one. Door and window frames were constructed using soffit stone, meaning stones installed overhead beneath the openings. This was a particularly complex step, as several stones were L-shaped and had to be precisely positioned and adjusted at height. The result ensured both structural solidity and respect for the architectural aesthetic of the project.
The very thin stone and joints of only 3 millimetres represented the main challenge of this project. This technical constraint was necessary to meet the design specifications and achieve the desired look. Quartz powder was even added to the caulking joints to obtain the intended effect. The strict joint size requirement left very little margin for error during stone installation and demanded an extremely precise approach.
