Damaged Bricks Replacement and Repointing

Following the engineering team’s assessment, damaged bricks were identified to be replaced and/or repointed. Helical stainless-steel bars were inserted for local reinforcement.

Substrate Cleaning and Preparation

Our masons cleaned the bricks to remove efflorescence and dirt and used a fiber-reinforced cementitious repair mortar to smooth the wall surface in specified areas. A waterbased acrylic primer was applied to saturate the masonry in preparation for the next steps.

Cementitious Patching Mesh Application

A few layers of structural mesh were added to wrap and strengthen walls, held in place by fiber-reinforced cementitious repair mortar. We used patching material and reflowable resurfacing mortar to level and patch floor slab where required and reinforce metal beams.

Fiber Reinforced Anchoring Ropes

The final stage of the strengthening started by marking insertion points for the carbon fiber cords as anchoring rope. Holes were drilled and filled with structural epoxy putty. After being inserted, the rope fibers were spread out in a 360 degrees star formation. More epoxy putty and epoxy resin were used to saturate and encapsulate the fiber fabrics, forming a high-performance laminate.

The First Canadian Contractor Using this Technology

Atwill-Morin was the first canadian contractor trusted by MAPEI and engineers to use this new fiber-reinforced cementitious matrix [FRCM] system designed for masonry. Our team exceeded expectations. Both during training and for the execution of work, on time and on budget!
