Major masonry restoration work included repointing, brick changes and Dutchman, removal of the “moustache” stairs that were installed after the Great fire of Toronto in 1911. The stair exit openings on the North façade were closed using brick and natural stone. The iconic “ MASSEY MUSIC HALL” in limestone was once again made whole. Our expert masonry restoration team sourced a matching stone and mock-ups of the lettering were prepared. Great attention was also paid to restoring the Pediment, were we now find the “shadows“ of the orchestra.

Air pollution, weathering and presence of soluble salts had deteriorated the stone. We were required to reproduce the stone, matching the existing stone profiles. Our highly skilled artisan masons completed the preparation and installation of new architectural stone pieces, spandrels and corners.

Soft blasting cleaning : an abrasive carried by a flow of compressed air and water directed at the substrate to be cleaned, to gently remove carbon crusts, paint and limescale. There was a large number of areas affected by efflorescence on the surface of the brick, which was treated with a poultice and water. The Pediment on the North Façade had been painted over with a lead based paint and was decontaminated using a super heated steam cleaner. Finally, a light chemical cleaning was used in general areas to remove mortar stains and atmospheric dirt.

Our team installed over 2000 cintec anchors in various locations to aid in the structural integrity and anchoring of additional steel components. The Cintec anchor system played a pivotal role in forming part of the anchor plates securing the East and West passerelles.
